My brother is famous for his red thumb (he's a GREAT cook), so when I was looking for a brekky recipe to share this week I was tickled to find this recipe of his for homemade bagels.
The Bro Bagel
1/2 c water
1/4 c milk
3 c flour
1 pkg yeast
2 tbsp sugar
Mix ingredients into dough. Let rise 10 minutes. Shape into donuts, cut out center holes with a cookie cutter (or use any circular shape such as a juice glass, etc.). Cover and let sit another 10 minutes.
To cook: A) Place on a cookie sheet. Broil in oven for 1 minute, then turn and broil the other side for 1 minute -- or -- Add to boiling water and boil for 7 minutes. (The Bro prefers to boil - he says it's the proper New Yaaawk way to do it.) B) Place on cookie sheet and bake in oven for 30-35 minutes at 375 degrees. Coat with butter, sesame seeds, etc, and serve.
Being the oddball that I am, I love seeds and nuts and things in my food. So I'm planning to make one batch plain, and one with sunflower seeds inside.
Yum!
Soon as the worst of the summer heat's gone bye, bye, I'll be baking more bread, again, and this one is going in the queue.
Thanks!
