I haven't done the word association list for a couple of weeks. One week I just didn't like the words. But last week I forgot. So I thought I better jump on this week's words right away:
- Statistics:: numbers
- Grin:: smile
- Saturn:: sullen
- Fulfilled:: happy
- Life plan:: chaos
- Cult:: guru
- Lily:: Langtry
- Stalemate:: impasse
- Celebration:: party
- Underwear:: under where?
Some funny memories got triggered in there.
A friend and I got hooked on a BBC series about Lily Langtry one summer. I mean hooked. If I ever find it on DVD I'll order it in a snap.
Making a life plan vs. living with chaos... that's a biggie, something my mom and I used to mull over (and sometimes argue about). She was the more goal oriented in what she espoused, or believed. I hated making goals and getting things down on paper in any kind of defined way, but in our actually living ... she had much more difficulty following through on a goal than I did. Maybe we espouse the things we are needing to learn.
The last one is an old joke from childhood that just keeps hanging on. Still makes me laugh, too. I definitely have an infantile sense of humor.
Which leads me to another memory - we had this little litany inherited from my grandmother. Don't know where she got it, but it was both ritual and amusement.
"So?" - person one
"Sew buttons..." - person two
"on your ..."
"dirty underwear"
"Under where?"
"Under there!" - said in unison
Sounds silly, doesn't it. It was silly. But it was also comforting. Something mindless and familiar. Mom and I went through this litany numerous times when she was dying, when she was in so much pain that morphine didn't help, and her tether to normal conversation and consciousness was thin. She could still do the underwear litany. We could still use this little routine to connect.
